GOALS & OBJECTIVES

The goals and objectives of the NBA Summer League Sports Science Classroom is to offer an educational opportunity for the NBA’s medical providers. The NBA Summer League Sports Science Classroom is focused on injures of the elite and professional basketball player.  We aim to offer a platform of discussion and collaboration amongst the NBA’s top medical providers to enhance the knowledge pertaining to the injuries encountered in the industry.

TRANSPORTATION:

7:30AM – 8:00AM – Shuttle Service from Thomas and Mack Center

LECTURE SERIES:

8:00AM – 9:30AM (Breakfast will be provided)

The lecture series will be directed by Alex McKechnie Sports Science Director and Assistant Coach for the Raptors and the Raptor’s physiotherapist and sports medical team.

  • Pre surgical rehabilitation of the shoulder
  • Injury assessment of the injured shoulder and early management
  • Return to play exercise and return to sport criteria for shoulder rehabilitation.
  • Controversies with shoulder instability: case studies.

CADAVER LABORATORY SESSION:

9:30AM – 12:00PM (Lunch will be provided)

The cadaver session will be led by Orthopedic Surgeons:
Tuesday July 9th: Dr. M. Miao, M.D. – Las Vegas Aces
Wednesday July 10th: Dr. D. Allred, M.D. – Phoenix Suns

Each individual will have a hands-on opportunity to understand the anatomic and surgical details of the shoulder.

  • Diagnostic arthroscopy and review of anatomy of the shoulder
  • Labral and biceps injuries in the shoulder evaluation and surgical repair
  • AC joint separation surgical repair
