Desert Pines High School Broadcast Academy students, who are a part of the On-Air Classroom, called the first game of Season 8 of the Summer League Jr. NBA, Spurs vs Cavs with Coach Markcus and Coach Martez. The Cavs took home the win, 56-39, with a 4th quarter run. Last night, So You Think You Can Dance came to a sensational season ending when Bailey Munoz was named the winner during the live two-hour season finale, on FOX. NBA players, coaches, fans, and celebrities joined in supporting the Summer League online auction benefitting the TSF Student Scholarship Fund. Autographed merchandise, basketballs, jerseys, sneakers and art were displayed on the concourse and available for on-line auction bidding. 100% of each winning bid was donated directly to the scholarship fund. In partnership with the Public Education Foundation, Tomorrow’s Stars Foundation Student Scholarships increase access to post-secondary educational opportunities available to college-bound students residing in Nevada. Recognizing and honoring our country’s active and retired military servicemen and women takes place on center court, each year, on Military Appreciation Day. TSF partners with Veterans Village of Las Vegas, throughout the year, and honors veterans residing at Veteran's Village during Summer League. Veterans honorees are selected from all branches of service and represent duty from WWII, Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, military conflicts and service at home. Recognizing their tireless dedication to the youth of the greater Las Vegas community, eight men and women were recognized for their commitment to youth sports during a half-time presentation on Coaches Appreciation Day. The honorees were selected for their years of service, commitment to providing opportunities for our local youth, and desire to coach at the youth level. 2019 honorees included coaches from Summer League Jr. NBA,UNLV, and two former NBA players who have spent years coaching our community’s youth, Robert Smith and “Sudden” Sam Smith.
Noche Latina is a program near and dear to our hearts and continues to be a highlight of the NBA Summer League every year. The Tomorrow’s Stars Foundation recognizes and awards scholarships to local graduating seniors selected by the Hispanic Educators Association of Nevada (HEAN) and high school administrators for their academic excellence and community service. Scholarships are awarded to the students to help with their college expenses. At the 2019 NBA Summer League, our Jr. NBA teams had a strong presence on and off the court. Summer League Jr. NBA Players, parents and coaches participated in the Jr. NBA Parent Forum, two basketball camps, championship night national anthem, half-time scrimmages on Jr. NBA Day, Court Science Classroom, Coaches Appreciation Day, and as members of the official ball crew of Summer League. Tomorrow's Stars program, On-Air Classroom, had a strong presence at the 2019 NBA Summer League. Led by Golden State Warriors broadcast team member Lawrence Scott and ESPN Broadcaster/ TSF Board Member Mark Jones, students from Desert Pines High School radio broadcast & sports marketing magnet program took part in the inaugural On-Air Classroom program.
